null Welcome by the Minority Ombudsman
Dear Visitor!
Welcome on the website of the Secretariat of the Ombudsman for the Rights of Minorities in Hungary. We operate this microsite as a part of the Office of the Commissioner for Fundamental Rights.
In October 2013, with the support of the nationality communities in Hungary and upon nomination by the Commissioner for Fundamental Rights, I was elected by the Parliament of Hungary for a mandate of six years to work for the enforcement of nationality rights.
As Minority Ombudsman, I have a duty to monitor the enforcement of nationality rights: this may imply the detection of inconsistencies in the legislation and the problems encountered in the course of applying the law. Together with my colleagues, we are committed to analyse and assess the issues raised – both in handling individual complaints and in carrying out complex investigations – in compliance with the principles and values we all share. We also expect open and continuous cooperation from all the institutions we contact and from all of our partners.
Sharing knowledge is an essential part of our job. Therefore we are determined to offer multiple channels of two-way communication: about the experiences of minority communities, their positions and rights, and about the role of the Minority Ombudsman and our duties related to protecting the rights of the minorities; the interactions between various minority groups, and the relation between minorities and the majority society as well as international relations. In close cooperation with the organisations of the nationality communities, we plan to provide information in accordance with the existing legal framework, but by using the most up-to-date tools and applications of community media.
In addition to this website, our Twitter, Facebook and Instagram sites all serve the purpose of providing the interested users with authentic information about the activities of the Minority Ombudsman and the enforcement of nationality rights in Hungary. Together with my colleagues, we make efforts to offer on our website an expanding volume of information not only in Hungarian, but also in English and in the languages of the nationalities in Hungary.
I am sure that you will find useful information here. As we treat your opinion, comments or questions as valuable feedback on our work, please feel free and encouraged to share your thoughts with us by using any of the communication channels indicated under “Contacts”.
With kind regards:
Elisabeth Sándor-Szalay
