null Discussion of the 2023 annual reports before Parliament

On 2 December, the plenary session of the National Assembly discussed the annual report on the activities of the Commissioner for Fundamental Rights and his deputies in 2023. This is traditionally the last stage of the (political) assessment of the document: according to the Act on the National Assembly, the Committee on Nationalities and the Committee on Justice are obliged to review, discuss and express their opinion on the current report every year, and if confirmed, it will be submitted to the plenary session.

During the discussion of document B/7848, the Committee of Nationalities in Hungary unanimously supported the position adopted by the Committee on 29 October, and was represented by Ukrainian nationality advocate Liliána Grexa.

In her speech, she stressed that "during the period covered by the report, the Minority Ombudsman and all the staff of her Secretariat considered the affairs of the indigenous nationalities of Hungary to be a very important task. Through their activities, they have once again made a significant contribution to the parliamentary adoption and application of the laws that help nationalities in their everyday life." In particular, she thanked the Minority Ombudsman and her colleagues for their special attention and active support for both Ukrainian nationalities and Ukrainian refugees in the face of Russian aggression against Ukraine, and for their maximum diligence and promptness in responding to requests and requests for assistance. At the end of her speech, she informed the MEPs and the large number of speakers present at the meeting that, on the basis of the report and the positive experiences of the past year, the Committee assessed the cooperation between the Minority Ombudsman and the Committee of Nationalities in Hungary as meaningful and useful, and remained confident that the joint and fruitful work would continue.

Parliament will decide on the adoption of the report at the last sitting of the autumn session.

We thank for the photos to Ukrainian nationality advocate Liliana Grexa.
